Why you should make this Cottage Cheese Chocolate Mousse
If you’ve been following me for a while, you will know that I love to include a variety of foods at all times. As a dietitian, I think it’s extremely important to include foods in your diet that make you feel good physically, but also mentally. This includes foods that may not typically make the “healthy” list, whatever that means.
That being said, I love to experiment in the kitchen and try recipes that have gone viral on social media. If this means a “healthified” version of a dessert, I want to give it a try and see how I like it. But don’t forget about traditional chocolate mousse. We want to make room for that too!
I love this cottage cheese version because it’s incredibly simple and quick- it’s done in 5 minutes! It’s super rich and chocolatey, meeting all of your chocolate cravings!

Ingredients needed
Here’s what you need to make this high protein chocolate mousse recipe:
Cottage cheese
I like to use 2% milk fat cottage cheese in this recipe so that we achieve the perfectly creamy texture.
Milk chocolate chips
You can use any size of chocolate chips or chocolate bar. These will be melted down before being used in the recipe.
Cocoa powder
A little bit of cocoa powder goes a long way to get that deep chocolate flavour.
Substitutions and alternatives
If you don’t have some of the recommended ingredients for this high protein mousse or you would prefer to make some substitutions, here are my suggestions:
Other cottage cheese options
Instead of 2% M.F. cottage cheese, you can opt for a lower fat option (ex. Fat free or 1%). However, the final product may not be as creamy.
You could also opt for a 4% M.F. cottage cheese for an extra creamy texture!
Semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips
Instead of milk chocolate chips, you can use semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips. You could also use mini chocolate chips!
I wouldn’t recommend using white chocolate chips because the coating on them prevents them from fully melting, and may create a clumpy chocolate mess.
Maple syrup or honey
You typically don’t need to add extra sugar since the chocolate chips provide the sweetness, but if you want to make it extra sweet, consider adding 1 teaspoon of maple syrup or honey and blending it up.
Vanilla extract
A small splash of vanilla extract can really add a lot of flavour to this mousse. Just be careful not to use too much or it will make the mousse too liquidy.
How to make Cottage Cheese Chocolate Mousse
It’s incredibly easy to make a batch of this cottage cheese mousse! Here’s what you need to do:
Pour the chocolate chips into a microwave-safe dish and microwave in 20-30 second increments until it is fully melted. Make sure to stir the chocolate in between each round.
Next, to a food processor or high speed blender, add 1 cup of 2% cottage cheese, the melted chocolate and 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder. Blend on high for 20-30 seconds. Use a spatula to scrape down the sides of the food processor or blender and then blend again until smooth.
Place the mousse in a dish (or divide it up into smaller individual dishes). You can eat it immediately but I like to place it in the fridge for 30 minutes or so, so that the mousse can set. This creates an even creamier and thick texture that’s iconic to chocolate mousse.
Serve it with a dollop of whipped cream or a shaving of chocolate and your favourite fruit. I hope you love it!
Tips for the best mousse
Make your life easier and measure out the chocolate chips before melting them.
If your chocolate mousse is lumpy, you need to continue blending it. Blend the mixture until it is perfectly smooth!
This recipe works the best with cottage cheese that isn’t super liquidy. This can be hard to know just by looking at the packaging and may depend on the brand. However, if there is extra liquid in your cottage cheese, try to drain this before adding it to the blender. This will prevent the mousse from being too runny.
To make the mousse sweeter, add in some extra melted chocolate or a bit of maple syrup or honey.
Suggested equipment
Food processor: This is the updated version of the food processor that I use. I’ve had it for years and it has been extremely well loved!
High-speed blender: If you plan on blending more smoothies and desserts like this chocolate mousse, this is a great blender! However, I still prefer the food processor when it comes to recipes like protein balls, dips and nut mixes (it doesn’t need as much liquid to blend).
Storing
To make sure you maintain the texture of the mousse and keep it fresh, place it in an airtight container and store it in the fridge. It will keep in the fridge for about 3-4 days.
Nutrition considerations
I suggest splitting a batch of this cottage cheese chocolate mousse into 3 or 4 servings, since it can be quite rich.
If you split it into 4, then 1 serving provides 8.5 grams of protein and 1.5 grams of fibre.
It also provides a significant source of B vitamins (including vitamin B12), calcium, selenium, zinc and other nutrients.
This mousse is naturally gluten free (as long as you opt for gluten free chocolate chips), nut free and vegetarian. For other dietary considerations, here are my suggestions:
To make it lactose free: opt for a lactose free cottage cheese and dairy free chocolate chips.
