Golden milk, aka turmeric milk, has taken the foodie world by storm in the last little while. At first, I was quite doubtful about the taste and definitely thought it was just a phase that would soon blow over. But after researching the benefits of turmeric and actually trying out the beverage, I can officially declare myself a fan (that will teach me not to knock it until I try it). The savoury flavour adds an interesting twist to a comforting beverage and allows you to alter the sweetness to your liking!
Turmeric is a yellow spice belonging to the ginger family that has been used as a remedy for digestive disorders for thousands of years. The property that gives the spice it’s vibrant colour and that is responsible for most of the health benefits is curcumin. This phytochemical has been the star of many research studies to determine the effects it has when added to food and drink. Curcumin is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, which is why it has been so widely studied. Researchers have looked at it’s role and success in improving symptoms of digestive disorders, diabetes prevention, cancer prevention, reducing cholesterol, improving heart health and more!
There is still a need for more human studies and the anti-inflammatory effects of curcumin, as well as the recommended dosage.
FYI: turmeric stains anything in its path, so handle carefully!
